FoxMarks to XMarks Shared Folder Update

Note, this post refers back to blogs which I no longer actively maintained.

I probably should have realised a lot sooner than I did, but there has been something a bit odd with my SpotIT feed on my RebootIT blog of late.

For some time now I’d been using an add-in for Firefox to manage my bookmarks. This was produced by Foxmarks.com and allowed me to do various clever things such as synchronise my bookmarks between computers, access them on a special web page and notably share them with others via a web page or an RSS feed….

Foxmarks have extended their support to other browsers and renamed a while back to Xmarks. Foolishly I never spotted the change to the RSS feed which was piping my list of useful bookmarks to my RebootIT blog. So if you shared any of your bookmarks with Foxmarks and never updated your links when the name change took place I’d suggest you head on over to Xmarks.com and get the new URLs.

One of the new features in the new Apple beta OS releases that people seemed to have had some confusion about are Tab Groups. This is a way that users will be able to store sets of tabs for later loading. I have a brief theory I’d like to share about the use of this feature.

The consensus I have seen seems to be that this is just another way of bookmarking. Many people have noted that they don’t see a particular use for it as on the desktop Safari handles tabs and windows well enough that you can just have multiple windows open with different sets of work.

HootSuite - Owly Bookmarklet for your iPhone

HootSuite is an iPhone/iPod touch social media dashboard app. It originally appeared as a mobile Twitter client but has expanded to incorporate links to other social networks. HootSuite also have their own URL shortening service Ow.ly, and in version 1.1.5.1 they introduced the option to prefix a URL in mobile Safari and have HootSuite launch with an Ow.ly’fied URL prepopulated into your message. I’m not one for remembering the details for things like this that I won’t use every day so I chose instead to create a simple little bookmarklet.

Spot IT

My background is as a systems developer and I like to think that I’m quite a good developer in so much as I like to achieve outcomes using the minimum of effort. In my book “a good programmer is a lazy programmer”. So whilst this post does not relate in any way to programming it does relate to me finding ways in which to update this blog with the minimum of effort. In this particular case through something you may have noticed a little way down on the right side of the page called “Spot IT”.
